Mood Disorders Program

Mood Disorders are serious medical conditions, which can occur when seemingly impossible circumstances are experienced or when there is a physical disruption within the brain’s chemistry. People who experience depression (by itself or as part of the extreme mood swings of bipolar mood disorder), or an elevation in mood should seek professional help in order to achieve resolution of this illness.

New Farm Clinic provides a specialized and comprehensive assessment and treatment program for the broad spectrum of Mood Disorders incorporating acute, chronic, primary and secondary disorders. On admission, doctors associated with the program will carry out comprehensive psychiatric and medical assessment of the patient. This ensures accurate diagnosis of psychiatric and physical problems and allows the appropriate treatment plan to be instituted. Diagnosis and treatment plans are discussed with the team, the referring doctor and the patient and where appropriate, the family.

Medical treatments may also be implemented to correct any underlying medical problems. If indicated, prompt referral to medical or surgical specialists is carried out.

Elderly Assessment Program

The Elderly Assessment Program offers a comprehensive diagnostic assessment of psychiatric disorders in the elderly to determine short term interventions and treatments. Through the Program, we are able to assist patients and their families with planning of long term management.

Entry into the Program is determined following a thorough medical, psychiatric and psychological examination conducted by specialists associated with the Program. Further investigations including biochemistry and neuroimaging (CT, MRI or SPECT) are arranged as appropriate.

Treatment as determined in each individual treatment plan is provided in a secure, comfortable and therapeutic environment.

The Program is designed to achieve maximum independence for each patient and not only addresses the individual problems and limitations, but also seeks to define strengths and maximize residual functioning.

Eating Disorders Program

At New Farm Clinic, we have been successfully treating eating disorders and the underlying psychological factors for over 15 years. We offer a safe, empathetic environment in which sufferers of eating disorders can gradually regain control of their life through medical, social and psychological support.

The Program provides patients with skills and support to help them reach and maintain a healthy weight and to deal with the stressors in their life without resorting to the damaging patterns of food restriction and/or bingeing and purging that characterize these disorders.

A treatment plan typically includes individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, nutritional counselling and medical management.

Patients requiring support following discharge can be referred to the Eating Disorder Day Program.
